Hello, Amazon Sellers!

Today we want to share with you the information about making product photos and best product photography tips for the 2019 year. We’ve been collecting this data for many years of selling on Amazon. We’ll also tell you how to take good product photos, how to make your photos more attractive to a buyer, so the maximum number of buyers would click on your product, rather than competitors one.

We’ve divided the article into two parts. In the first one, we will go through the basic Amazon’s requirements for taking product photos and learn what you should keep in mind while creating these photos. In the second part, we are going to tell you some tricks of standing out among your competitors. So, get comfortable and let's start my ULTIMATE AMAZON PRODUCT IMAGE GUIDE FOR SELLERS 2019.

Part 1. The basic image parameters according to Amazon’s rules

We can upload 9 photos for each Amazon product in total. 7 images will be displayed to the left of the main product photo.

The remaining two photos will be shown in an opened window, if you click ‘large image’.

So, you need to prepare 9 photos for uploading them to Amazon in the future.

Here is a link to the full list of Amazon’s requirements for product images, and I recommend adhering to it. Otherwise, in some situations, for example, if a photo doesn’t match a product, or a competitor will complain, you can be suspended or even your Seller Central Account may be banned.

Basing on my own experience, I’ll describe the basic requirements for all images. They are divided into general ones, requirements for the main product image and for all other images except the main one.

General requirements for all images:

  1. The resolution of uploaded photos should be at least 1000x1000 px (I recommend uploading photos at least 2000x2000 px size, to activate zoom option.
  2. Amazon supports just the following image formats: TIFF (.tif .tiff), JPEG (.jpeg/.jpg), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png)
  3. 3D renders are forbidden (I can say that it’s true if it’s poor-quality 3D renders, when Amazon actually can prove that it is a picture, not a real photo. Anyway, you may receive a warning from Amazon that you should remove this photo). Well, you can’t upload painted images of your products too.
  4. All photos should show your real products, which you are selling at the moment. If you’ve received a product party of another color or something else, upload new photos that display the changes.

Requirements for the main image:

  1. Your product should occupy 85% or even more of the space on the main image.
  2. The main image of your product should be only on the white background. (But as I often notice, many sellers use different icons on their main photos, so, you can complain about it to Amazon in such cases).
  3. Pornographic and offensive materials are restricted.
  4. Also, you are not allowed to upload a cropped image of your product, it should be a photo of the whole product.

Part 2. What kinds of Photos and Images can be Prepared for Further Uploading to Amazon

Now, I’ll try to tell and show you all the possible variations of product photos/images that will be helpful in getting the maximum conversions number. Let's go!

Remove all the space from your product to make your item look as large as possible on the photo. After doing this, your product will look bigger compared to competitors’ ones.

Look, I will take any photo from Amazon now and trim all whitespace except the product itself, while the image size of will remain the same, but product will look bigger in search results especially on mobile.

Take a picture of how people can use your products in real life in order to maximize its benefits in the buyer’s eyes. Such photos usually affect the conversion increase.

Also don’t forget that the most important thing for all the photos is high quality. Contact professionals. Nine photos won’t be expensive, but the result will be excellent and long-term.

Also, you can take a picture of your product in some special environment, not just on a white background. For example, take photos in the kitchen if it's something for the kitchen. Such photos are always more lively and interesting than ‘white-background’ ones.

Using infographics on your Amazon photos will help you to show all the benefits of a product. It can also be important to a buyer. You can show anything, the blade thickness, the charging time, the materials from which your products are made. Here are some examples of excellent infographics below. There are the links to these products so that you can examine how it’s done properly:

You are allowed to take macro shots for all the photos except the main one. Show the most interesting parts of your product, which look good in macro photography (small details, thickness, quality of materials).

If your product has any non-standard or cool packaging, be sure to show it in your photos. People who search something for a gift will pay more attention to your goods. A good-looking package always  adds some attractiveness to the product. Also, you can show all parts of your product in one image.

Take a picture of your product with some other well-known item (a pencil, a coin, an iPhone) for the buyer to understand exactly what size is your product.

Don’t forget to mention in the product description that this additional item on the photo doesn’t come bundled with your product. We’ve faced cases when buyers asked: “Why I haven’t received all items that were on the photo in a one kit?” :)

If your product has obvious advantages over competitors' ones, show them in all possible ways (infographics, macro photography, real-use photos) and put these photos first in the thumbs for a potential buyer to see them on the product page.

Do Your Research

Everyone in eCommerce knows that photos are shop windows online. They are as important as reviews on Amazon! Still, any customer pays attention to photos, and then to reviews.

So, we have already discussed the most useful tips for making the best product images ever. But what to do when it comes to generating new product photography ideas for your product and lifestyle pictures?

Check Out What Your Competitors Do

This is the first thing to do on Amazon. For example, if you notice that on some marketplace (for example, Amazon UK) they use images only with the white background, you can enter the niche with adding lifestyle photos. If you don’t know how they will look like, search for them on other marketplaces. Here is an example from the web:

You are not tied to the examples from your competitors. Still, this is a great way to see what others do and to define whether such photos grab attention. All in all, you can look at them as if you were a consumer, not a seller.

Look at What eCommerce Sites Do

Amazon is great but it is not the only place where sellers post high-quality photos with creative ideas. Take advantage of researching what other niche websites do. Check out photos of well-known brands, as they commonly hire the best photographers. This will be your inspiration for creating your own unusual and attractive photos.

Think Creative and Aim at Your Audience

The goal of product lifestyle images in enhancing the product’s value. They should tell customers more about its quality and functions.

So, you should take into consideration several things to know that your creativity will be aimed at the specific interests of the target audience. Here are they:

  • Who is your audience? - Learn who purchases your goods, what they like, what they find appealing. Imagine how lifestyle pictures will affect their emotions.
  • What locations or props are suitable? For example, products for tourists may be shot in a beautiful landscape.
  • Do you need models for your pictures? If you want to shoot some situational scenes, think of asking your friends or family for help, as hiring professional models is expensive.

In other words, try to think outside the box, find new approaches to common situations, be creative!

What Will You Need to Shoot Photos Yourself?

Now, we’ve got to DIY product photography.

First of all, consider the size of your product, where it is ordinarily used, a suitable location for it, and think whether you have models who will take part in your product photoshoot. All this is necessary for lifestyle photography. Still, if you want to make usual static pictures, you will need the same basic things:

  • Ideas for locations and pictures.
  • A new well-looking product in perfect condition.
  • A camera or a phone with a good camera.
  • A photo editing app.
  • Models for lifestyle photos.
  • Props, if that is suitable and your product will look great in front of all the surrounding things.

To Do List for Taking Photos for Amazon

Here are the main steps of how to take great product photos for Amazon:

1. Prepare for the Shoot

If you want to take lifestyle photos, ensure that the product itself looks good and clean. You should also search for some location inside or outside to find the most suitable one. Keep in mind that products have to benefit from locations, not be lost on their background. For example, you can take photos of knives or spoons in the kitchen, however, backpacks and bags look better outside, for example, you can take some street photos with a model wearing them.

Check the light. There must be enough light to make photos attractive and bright. Too dark places affect the quality of images. Well, if you have a DSLR camera, this might not be a problem. Find the best lighting for product photography and you won’t have any further problems with the quality.

Preparing your products for the shoot might take some time too. They may need polishing, dusting or stuffing with something. Do that if necessary.

2. Taking Photos

Don’t hesitate to make tons of shots, as the more lifestyle pictures you take, the more you can edit and use on Amazon. Try different product photography ideas and various locations for one product, as later you’ll have a chance to select the greatest lifestyle images.

While shooting, remember about leaving enough space around your product. This is done for further cropping. Amazon requires 1:1 square cropping for all images, so better leave some space to choose the best perspective when editing photos.

Keep in mind photography principles:

  • Light is everything, as without proper lighting you won’t be able to add it programmatically. If you don’t have enough light, you’ll have to repeat the whole work once again, as the quality of images wouldn’t be high enough.
  • Use the rule of thirds. This will help your lifestyle image look balanced and harmonic.
  • Color your photos in a natural way. Try to keep colors natural and don’t overuse Saturation and Contrast filters, as many people do that and get too fancy photos.
  • Work with cropping and framing. Keep the horizon straight, avoid jarring lines, don’t crop people’s heads.

Don’t ever include to your photos brand names until it is your own brand name. This may either distract users’ attention or get you in trouble with the law.

Before taking pictures of people, you have to get their written consent. They should allow you to use their photos for advertising or marketing. Amazon will require this.

3. Editing Photos

Once you have a lot of pictures shot, let’s proceed with editing them with software solutions. There are too many apps for that, we won’t insist on a specific one, so you can proceed with the one you like the most.

  • Cropping and straightening. As we told you before, Amazon requires 1:1 square images.
  • Editing & using filters. Don’t overuse automatic solutions, as they look great on Instagram, not on Amazon. For eCommerce, natural colors are needed.
  • Manual edits. This is about adding a bit of contrast, brightness, sharpening details.

A Couple of Words at the End

Of course, it’s up to you how to make your photos, but I recommend finding an experienced professional (always look at the portfolio before ordering a product photoshoot for your items). The price for a set of photos can range from $70 to $700. Try to find a photographer in your city and control the process as much as possible. Most likely the prices will be much lower than elsewhere.

Ask the photographer for all the source files. You’ll have a proof that these are really your photos, in case problems on Amazon, or if someone steals your photos.

If you want, try to do DIY product photography, as described above in our short tutorial on how to take product photos and lifestyle pics. Such product photography can be even more creative than pictures shot by a professional, as people always try their best while shooting their own products.

Don’t forget to look at how your photos on the product page and on the search page look like on mobile devices, this is also very important.
